BEN-TSIYEN DELMAN

BEN-TSIYEN DELMAN (b. April 8, 1899)
He was born in Jerusalem to a prominent family.  He was the grandson of the religious judge of Jerusalem, R. Mendl Moynershtern.  Until age fourteen he studied at his grandfather’s yeshiva, later becoming a student at the Betsalel Art School; subsequently, he studied art in Paris and in Munich.  In 1916 he arrived in the United States and began publishing stories and images of life in Palestine in Idishes tageblat (Jewish daily newspaper) in New York.  He also published criticism of art and Jewish painting there.  In 1920 he visited Israel and from there sent correspondence pieces to Idishes tageblat and for the English-language Jewish magazines Hebrew Standard, East Side Weekly, and others.  He also wrote under the pen name Eliyahu.  In more recent years he had been completely absorbed in painting.  His works have been shown in various art museums in the United States.
