BEN-TSIYEN
DELMAN (b. April 8, 1899)
He was born in Jerusalem to a
prominent family. He was the grandson of
the religious judge of Jerusalem, R. Mendl Moynershtern. Until age fourteen he studied at his
grandfather’s yeshiva, later becoming a student at the Betsalel Art School;
subsequently, he studied art in Paris and in Munich. In 1916 he arrived in the United States and
began publishing stories and images of life in Palestine in Idishes tageblat (Jewish daily
newspaper) in New York. He also
published criticism of art and Jewish painting there. In 1920 he visited Israel and from there sent
correspondence pieces to Idishes tageblat
and for the English-language Jewish magazines Hebrew Standard, East Side
Weekly, and others. He also wrote
under the pen name Eliyahu. In more
recent years he had been completely absorbed in painting. His works have been shown in various art
museums in the United States.
