SHIYE
URBAS (May 6, 1919-February 1981)
He was born in Ostrowce,
Poland. At six years of age he was
orphaned. He studied in religious elementary
school. He spent WWI in Soviet
Russia. Afterward, he lived in France,
Israel, and from 1952 Toronto. From 1951
he was publishing in Fray yisroel
(Free Israel) in Tel Aviv, Vokhnblat
(Weekly newspaper) and Idishe zhurnal
(Jewish journal) in Toronto, Morgn
frayhayt (Morning freedom), Yidishe
kultur (Jewish culture), and Zamlungen
(Anthologies) in New York, and Naye prese
(New Press) in Paris, among others.
Among his works: Der onheyb,
dertseylungen (The beginning, stories) (Toronto: IKUF, 1970), 153 pp.
