AVROM GUSAKOV

AVROM GUSAKOV

He was born in a town in Podolia, Ukraine.  At the first, free community elections following the Russian Revolution of 1917, he was elected head of the Jewish community.  Over the years 1919-1921, he lived through the pogroms in the region that were led by Petliura.  He authored a poem, Der emigrant (The emigrant), a bit of history for Ukraine during the Petliura years, 1919-1921 (Vienna-New York, 1927), 219 pp.  It included a foreword and prefatory poem by the author, in which he communicated his experiences during the pogroms, and addressing the essence of the book, he wished that “every image should burn, flame, scream, and arouse in everyone’s soul a desire somehow to do something so that such ugliness might never again be repeated.”
