HERSH
(TSVI) PORT (1895-June 13, 1974)
He was born in Kovno,
Lithuania. He was a leader in the field
of Jewish cooperatives in Lithuania and Latvia.
Until 1938 he was in charge of the Jewish People’s Bank in Kovno. He contributed to: Idishe tsaytung (Jewish newspaper) and Idisher kooperator (Jewish cooperative) in Kovno (1924-1930) of
which he served as editor. He also
placed work in: Dos folk (The
people), Unzer veg (Our way), and Frimorgn (Morning) in Riga; the
anthology Lite (Lithuania) (Tel Aviv,
1965) to which he contributed a historical work, “Di yidishe kredit-kooperatsye
in lite” (The Jewish credit cooperative in Lithuania). He also published under the pen name of H. Y.
Efrat. He died in Tel Aviv.
