SHABSE (SHEFTL) KARAKUSHANSKI (1905-February 1, 1972)
He was
born in Shekhevits, Ukraine. He was
driven from his village and settled in Novoselits (Novoseltsa). He moved to Rio de Janeiro in the early 1920s. In 1923 he founded in Rio Dos idishe vokhenblat (The Jewish weekly
newspaper). He published articles,
features pieces, poetry, and stories in the weeklies Idishe prese (Jewish press) and Idishe
folkstsaytung (Jewish people’s newspaper) which he founded in 1925. In 1935 he changed the latter to a daily (the
first in Brazil) and edited it until 1941.
His work appeared in the anthology Brazilyanish
(Brazilian) (Buenos Aires, 1973) and in Undzer
baytrog (Our contribution) in Rio.
His books includes: Aspektn fun
yidishn lebn in brazil (Aspects of Jewish life in Brazil), 2 vols. (Rio,
1956-1957); Der turist (The tourist),
a novel about Brazilian Jewish life (Rio, 1964), 400 pp. His novel Der
alter vikuekh (The old debate) was published in the Portuguese Diário israelita (Jewish journal),
because he was unable to get in published in the Yiddish original. He died in Rio de Janeiro.
