GERSHON KRAKOVER (1841-July 25, 1922)
He was
born in Shumsk, Volhynia, descended from a fanatical Hassidic family.
He became a follower of the Jewish Enlightenment and endured fierce
struggles with his parents. In 1891 he
emigrated to Pittsburgh, where he worked as a bookkeeper and contributor to the
local Folks-tsaytung (People’s
newspaper). He wrote a series of scholarly
philosophical articles for the anarchist Fraye
arbeter shtime (Free voice of labor) and the socialist Forverts (Forward),
both in New York, although he was not a member of either party. He also placed work in: Yidishes tageblat (Jewish daily newspaper), Morgn-zhurnal (Morning journal), Tsukunft (Future), and Hebrew-language newspapers. In his last years he moved far from the
printed word.
