YISROEL VELNER

YISROEL VELNER (1897-1932)
            He was born in Lodz, Poland, into a working-class family.  He studied in religious primary school, in a Russian [public school, and for a time in a secular high school.  He was a leader in the Zionist movement, in Bet Am (Home of the people), and in philanthropic institutions.  From 1916 until his death, he was an internal contributor to Lodzer tageblat (Lodz daily newspaper), where, aside from news and the Lodz chronicle, he also published reportage pieces and short impressionistic depictions of life in Lodz.  He died in Lodz.
