DR.
LAZAR EPSHTEYN (d. 1944)
He came from Kovno, was an active
member in Lithuania at the headquarters of the Lithuanian Social-Democratic
Party, published a book in Lithuanian on school hygiene, and also wrote in
Yiddish. He was one of the medical
colleagues in the Vilna ghetto, at the head of the sanitary epidemiological division. He offered much relief at the school-medical
center in the ghetto, giving speeches on medical topics and writing articles
for Folksgezunt (People’s health), a
vital newspaper in the Vilna ghetto. He
also wrote a highly precise diary with statistics concerning sanitary work in
the ghetto, and he composed a poem about ghetto life. He died in the ghetto.
