BALBINE KLATSHKE
She was
the wife of Rabbi Shloyme Klatshke in Yampol (Yampil), Podolia. She translated Walter Scott’s historical
novel Ivanhoe under the title: Ivnhoye, oder dos umkehrung fun dem kreyts
ritser, roman in fir theyle (Ivanhoe, or the return of the Crusader knight,
a novel in four parts) (Warsaw: Aleksander Ginz, 1879), 2 vols. This was one of the first Yiddish
translations of European literature during the era of the Jewish Enlightenment.
