SHIFRE-OSNAS
LIVAY (1892-July 26, 1957)
She was born in Koydanovo, Minsk
district, Byelorussia, into a working-class family. She went to work when still young and joined
the socialist movement. In 1910 she
moved to the United States and worked for many years in a sweatshop. At the same time she was active in the labor
movement and in the association of Koydanovo native in New York. Under the influence of her friend, the poet
Sore Reyzen, she began writing poetry and sketches which she published in New
York in: Fraye arbeter-shtime (Free
voice of labor), Der amerikaner (The
American), Morgn-zhurnal (Morning
journal), Kinder-zhurnal (Children’s
magazine), and Nyu yorker vokhnblat
(New York weekly newspaper), among others.
She died in New York.
