SHERF (Isiu Schärf, 1913-1994)
He was a graphic artist, born in
Czernowitz. He provided scenographies
for Sh. Shvarts’s miniature theater “Kamelon” (1933) and for the Yiddish state
theater of Jassy (Iași)
(1950-1963). He created the scenography
for plays by Sholem-Aleichem, Avrom Goldfaden, Yankev Gordin, and Der
Tunkeler. He had illustrations in: Leyb
Levin’s Zeks shloflider (Six
lullabies) (Czernowitz, 1939; Tel Aviv, 1969); Bilder un motivn fun der yidisher literatur (Images and motifs in
Yiddish literature) (Tel Aviv, 1969); Zelik Berditshever’s Lider mit nigunim (Poems with melodies) (Tel Aviv, 1980), 47
pp. He prepared 100 graphics for
publication for Yiddish expressions.

ReplyDeleteThe composer of the Six Lullabies was Leibu Levin, my father.
Here is some more information about the artist: Isiu Schärf immigrated to Israel in 1973 and lived in Rehovot. He taught art and painted. He died in 1994.
