YITSKHOK-SHOYEL
(IZIDOR) HURVITS (b. April 7, 1889)
He was born in Slutsk (Sluck),
Byelorussia. He studied in religious
primary school and yeshiva. In 1904 he
came to the United States and settled in Milwaukee; there, he graduated from
the pedagogical institute and from a course in library science. He was an active community and Zionist
leader. He was founder of the “social
centers” and a contributor to local educational institutions. He was also involved with B’nai B’rith. He wrote for the Milwaukee Journal, Milwaukee Free
Press, and Milwaukee Leader
(edited by Victor Berger)—all in English.
After 1915 he was editor-publisher of Milvoker vokhnblat (Milwaukee weekly newspaper), which was printed
in his own publishing house. He
published a series of articles on the history of Jews in Wisconsin. He was last living in Milwaukee.
