P. HIRSH
He was born in Lithuania. In 1894 he moved to South Africa and settled
in Johannesburg where he opened a small publishing house. He compiled and published Luaḥ trn″t
(Calendar for 1898-1899) (Johannesburg, 1898/1899), 36 pp. This was the first published [Jewish]
calendar in South Africa. It was also a
kind of guide to Johannesburg. Aside from
the dates of the Jewish and general holidays, it also provided a variety of
information about local community life and government communiqués with
advertisements in Yiddish and English.
Further biographical details remain unknown.
