IZIDOR
HELLMAN (ISIDOR HELLMANN)
He was born in Warsaw, Poland. He was a Jewish community leader at the end
of the nineteenth century. He was active
in the organization to settle Jews on the land, and on assignment for this task
he traveled to Argentina to investigate the local Baron Hirsch colonies. He was the author (with Yakob Yedvabnik) of a
handbook, Di beshraybung fun argentine un
ire kolonyen (A description of Argentina and its colonies), “from proper
sources” (Warsaw, 1890), 64 pp., which appeared in five editions with the last
in 1893 with the title Di beshraybung fun
argentine un ire colonyen mitn bild fun baron hirsh un zayne byografye un der
plan fun di kolonyen (A description of Argentina and its colonies with a
picture of Baron Hirsch and his biography and the plan for the colonies), 108
pp. The book was popular among the poor
Jewish masses in Russia, Galicia, and Romania and influenced them to go to
Argentina.
