YANKL SHAFIR (1908-1942)
Descendant
of a working family, he was born in Minsk.
While still young, he began writing notices and articles in the Yiddish
press for youths. For a number of years,
he served as secretary to the editorial board of Yunger arbiter (Young laborer) in Minsk (1922-1935). In early 1935 he was arrested with a group of
young newspaper activists and spent a year in the Minsk prison. He was later secretary for Yunger leninets (Young Leninist) until
1938, when the journal was closed down. He
