YEVGENI GEORGEVICH KAGAROV

YEVGENI GEORGEVICH KAGAROV (b. 1882)
He was born in Tiflis.  He was a Soviet Armenian researcher into Yiddish, although his primary area of research was Greco-Roman culture.  From 1921 he was a member of the Yiddish philological commission at the Kharkov Jewish bureau of the People’s Commissariat for Education.  In the commission’s organ, Yidish (Yiddish) (Kharkov), he published his first essay (48 pp.): “Vegn dem bashtand un der opshamung fun yidish” (On the composition and origin of Yiddish) (1923).  He also wrote for: Filologishe shriftn (Philological writings) of YIVO on Yiddish syntax and Yiddish grammar (translated by Zalmen Reyzen).  He worked on a Yiddish etymological dictionary—samples of which were published in Tsaytshrift (Periodical) 2/3 (Minsk) (1928).  He also wrote in Soviet scholarly serials on the philological work of Mates Mizes, Zalmen Reyzen, Sh. Birnboym, and on Hermann Strack’s and K. Shults’s dictionaries.  After 1929 he ceased working on Yiddish.
