DANIEL TSIGLER
He was
born and lived in Staropolye, Ukraine. He
was a Talmud teacher and a rabbinic judge.
For many years he worked on a translation into Yiddish of the
Mishnah. The first part Seder zeraim (Order of seeds), with a
preface and a warning—“one does not rule on the judgments of the Mishnah on one’s
own, but asks a question of a rabbi or rabbinic judge in one’s locale”—was published
in Königsberg in 1840 (second edition, 1861), with approbations from the great
sages of the era. His Yiddish
translation of Zeraim was later
included in all editions of the Mishnah with the stylized Yiddish used in
translating sacred texts prepared by Y. M. Yavets.
