YISROEL-MIKHL
TROYB (June 1858-March 1928)
He was born in Keydan (Kėdainiai),
Lithuania, a grandson of the brilliant sages, Rabbi Avrom-Shimen Toyb and Rabbi
Abele Posveler. He studied in the synagogue
study chamber and in yeshivas, as well as secular subjects abroad. In 1878 he wrote for Hamelits (The advocate) and Hamagid
(The preacher). He later moved to South
Africa and lived for the most part in Johannesburg, where he was secretary of
the Mishna society in the Grinem Study House.
From July 14, 1903 until 1908, he published a weekly newspaper in
Yiddish and Hebrew, entitled Hakokhav-Der
yudisher shtern (The star, the Jewish star). He subsequently returned to Russia where he
lived in Lublin and Telts.
