YISROEL
ZHOFER (1897-July 1941)
This was the pen name of Yisroel
Yofe, born in Dusiat (Dusetos), Kovno district, Lithuania. He studied in religious primary school, later
graduating from a senior high school in Dvinsk (Daugavpils). Over the years 1919-1922, he was an officer
in the Lithuanian army, later an internal contributor to Di idishe shtime (The Jewish voice) in Kovno, in which he carried
out the first political interviews in the Yiddish press in Lithuania. He also wrote for the Lithuanian serial Mūsų garsas (Our voice) and other
Lithuanian Jewish and general periodicals in Kovno. He was murdered by the Nazis.
