YEKHIEL-YISROEL ZHABNER

YEKHIEL-YISROEL ZHABNER
He was born in Ostrovtse (Ostrowiec), Poland.  He was a well-known wedding entertainer and jester in Poland and Galicia in the middle of the nineteenth century.  He authored storybooks in rhyme, such as: Megile yishre fun mapoles homen (Straightforward scroll concerning the fall of Haman) (Cracow, 1884), 51 pp., with a preface in which he wrote: “Filled with frank words to be used for both poor and rich.  Everyone big or small should understand.  Each person, even small children, God’s wonder, is a miracle of God, through the merit of Mordechai and Esther!  We take the trouble to praise God on high, because he has given us life!  Do not be stingy with money in this world.  As there is but one way, one must purchase the scroll.  And, for one’s merit one will be worthy of the redemption.”
