YISROEL BERKOVITSH (ISRAIL BERCOVICI)

YISROEL BERKOVITSH (ISRAIL BERCOVICI) (December 20, 1921-1988)
            He was born in Botoșani, Romania.  He studied dentistry and later graduated from university.  Over the years 1955-1982, he was the literary manager of the Bucharest Yiddish State Theater.  He was the author and reviewer of variety shows.  He edited Ikuf-bleter (Pages from IKUF [Jewish Cultural Association]), 1948-1953, in Bucharest.  For that serial as well as for Vegvayzer (Guide), he wrote articles and poems.  In book form: In di oygn fun a shvartser kave, lider (In the eyes of a [cup of] black coffee, poems) (Bucharest: Kriteryon, 1974), 113 pp.; Hundert yor yidish teater in rumenye, 1876-1976 (A century of Yiddish theater in Romania, 1876-1976) (Bucharest: Kriteryon, 1976), 308 pp.; Fliendike oysyes, lider (Flying letters, poems) (Bucharest: Kriteryon, 1984), 64 pp.
