YANKEV RABINOVITSH


YANKEV RABINOVITSH (b. November 16, 1909)
            He was a journalist, born in Telz, Lithuania.  He studied in religious elementary school, later in a Hebrew-German school in Berlin.  He was secretary of the Zionist socialist party in Lithuania.  He was rescued from the Kovno ghetto, lived several years in Italy, and in 1948 made his way to Montreal where he worked for a time as a Hebrew teacher.  He wrote articles and reportage pieces for: the Kovno daily newspaper Dos vort (The word), earlier known as Unzer vort (Our word), 1934-1940; Afrikaner idishe tsaytung (African Jewish newspaper); and Keneder odler (Canadian eagle).  Most recently he edited the Montreal page in Algemeyne zhurnal (General journal) in New York.  In book form: Bleter fun yidish lite (Pages from Jewish Lithuania) (Tel Aviv, 1974), 289 pp.  He was last living in Montreal.  His pen names: Y. Rabino and Y. Yankevson.
