MARGOLIS (June 18, 1906-January 3, 1967)
He was born in Rava-Ruska, eastern
Galicia. He studied in religious
elementary school, synagogue, and with private tutors. In 1924 he helped found the “Tseire-Hamizraḥi” (Mizrachi youth)
organization in Galicia. From 1928 he
was living in Montevideo, Uruguay. He
was a pioneer in Yiddish press, cofounder of the Jewish writers’ association, and
secretary general of the Zionist Federation and the Jewish community
administration. He served as editor of Urugvayer yidishe prese (Uruguay Jewish
press) in Montevideo (1928). From 1940
he was editor of the local weekly Der
moment (The moment). He authored the
pamphlet Di geshikhte fun tsienizm in
urugvai (The history of Zionism in Uruguay) (Montevideo, 1955), 48 pp. He was also editor and publisher of Yidisher tashn-luekh (Jewish pocket calendar),
which appeared annually from 1944. He died
in Montevideo, where he owned a publishing house.
