YOYSEF KAZHDAN (JOSEPH KAGE)


YOYSEF KAZHDAN (JOSEPH KAGE) (September 21, 1918-1996)
            He was born in Minsk.  He moved to Montreal in 1930.  He studied history, philosophy, and social science, and he received his doctoral degree from McGill University and the Université de Montréal.  From 1943 he published a great number of articles on social and political issues and Jewish history in Canada in: Keneder odler (Canadian eagle) in Montreal, Der idisher zhurnal (The Jewish journal) in Toronto, Dos yidishe vort (The Yiddish word) in Winnipeg, and elsewhere.  Some of his writings were included in the anthology Kanadish (Canadish) (Buenos Aires, 1974).  His works include: Tvey hundert yor yidishe emigratsye keyn kanade (Two hundred years of emigration to Canada) (Montreal, 1960)—also published in English and French; Mir zaynen do, antologye fun yidisher literatur (We are here, anthology of Yiddish literature) (Montreal, 1973), 200 pp.  Of his English-language writings, note should be made of Chapter One: Sketches of Canadian Life under the French Regime (Montreal, 1962), 280 pp., which was used as a textbook in some Canadian schools
