LEYE SVIRSKI


LEYE SVIRSKI (b. 1926)
            She was born in Sventsyan (Svencionys), Vilna region.  She studied in the Jewish public school and the Jewish high school in Svencionys.  For a time she was confined in the Svencionys ghetto, later in the ghettos of Vilna, Kovno, and Shavel (Šiauliai), later still in the concentration camps of Zhezmer and Koshedar (Kaišiadorys), Lithuania, and in Germany, where she was liberated with her mother.  A significant number of her poems were published in Sh. Katsherginski’s Lider fun di getos un lagern (Songs from the ghettos and camps) (New York, 1948).  She was last living in the state of Israel.
