AVROM-YITSKHOK KAMINSKI (1867-March 14, 1918)
The
husband of Ester-Rokhl Kaminski (Esther-Rachel Kaminska), he was born in Volya
(Wola), near Warsaw. He was an artist
and theater director. He authored plays,
which were staged by his various troupes, among them: Rabi akive mit zayne 24 toyzent talmidim (Rabbi Akiva with his
24,000 students); Di leviim (The Levites);
Leytsim (Clowns); and Tserisene neshomes, oder di farblondzhete
(Torn up souls, or the lost ones) which was later produced under the title Der poylisher yid, oder yankele (The
Polish Jew, or Yankele). He dramatized
Shomer’s novels Di ayzerne froy (The
iron woman) and Even-ezre, oder der
idisher minister (Evan-Ezra, or the Jewish minister). His only published play was Yudishe akteren af der rayze, a komedye in
dray akten (Jewish actors on a voyage, a comedy in three acts) (Warsaw:
Bikher far ale, 1908), 64 pp. (published earlier in Roman-tsaytung [Fiction newspaper]). Kaminski translated: Maxim Gorky’s Na dne (The lower depths) as Afn letstn shtapl (At the last level); Friedrich
Schiller’s Di royber (The robbers
[original: Räuber]); Molière’s Der ayngebildeter kranker (The imaginary invalid [original: Le Malade imaginaire]) and Der korger (The miser [original: L’Avare]); and Sergey Naydyonov’s Vanyushins kinder [original: Deti Vanyushina]); among other works. He died in Lomzhe.
