BALBINE KLATSHKE

BALBINE KLATSHKE
She was the wife of Rabbi Shloyme Klatshke in Yampol (Yampil), Podolia.  She translated Walter Scott’s historical novel Ivanhoe under the title: Ivnhoye, oder dos umkehrung fun dem kreyts ritser, roman in fir theyle (Ivanhoe, or the return of the Crusader knight, a novel in four parts) (Warsaw: Aleksander Ginz, 1879), 2 vols.  This was one of the first Yiddish translations of European literature during the era of the Jewish Enlightenment.
