SHMUEL
GELBART (1908-June 1943)
He was born in Lodz into a family of
scholars. His father Yisroel-Itshe was
the author of Hebrew-language religious works.
He studied in religious elementary school and in the yeshivas of Lodz
and Mir. Until February 1940, he was
living in Lodz, later in Tshenstokhov
(Częstochowa). He
published the book Di groyse yeshive “toyres
khesed” in lodzh, ire shafer un boyer (The great yeshiva “Torat Ḥesed,” its founder and builder) (Lodz: Masora, 1929), 76
pp. In this book he gave a well-rounded
picture of the lifestyle at this yeshiva.
He died during the selection in the Częstochowa ghetto.
