YEHOSHUA
GELBFARB-GILADI (November 22, 1903-August 25, 1963)
He was born in Warsaw, raised in a
strongly religious environment, and studied in religious elementary school, in
yeshivas, and later graduated from the community seminary in Warsaw. He began writing for Togblat (Daily newspaper) in Lemberg in 1922, and later published
articles on education and youth-related issues in Moment (Moment), Radyo
(Radio), and Baderekh (On the
road)—in Warsaw. In 1935 his book, Vi azoy dertsien kinder (How to raise
children) appeared in print in Warsaw.
In 1936 he emigrated to Canada.
He worked as a teacher in Montreal.
Later, he lived in Minneapolis and Chicago. Over the years 1948-1952, he placed pieces
with Keneder odler (Canadian eagle)
in Montreal. In 1949 his book Fun toyre-oytser (From the treasury of
the Torah) appeared in print in Montreal (250 pp.). In 1950-1953 the association of Hebrew
schools in Canada published three parts of his textbook Ḥoveret avoda (Workbook).
In 1936 he edited the monthly journal Kinderland (Children’s world) in Havana, Cuba. He also wrote under the pen names: Y. Giladi,
D. Kokh, and Y. Avi-Zev. His scholarly
essays excelled in their modern Yiddish style.
He was living in New York, where he died.
