ELYE GUMENER (February 1, 1886-August 1942)
He was born in Mariampol, Lithuania. In 1912 he graduated from with a law degree
in St. Petersburg. He was active in
various Jewish community organizations in Russia. He wrote for the provincial Russian press and
in the Yiddish newspapers, especially for the Zionist socialist party. During the civil war in Ukraine, he took a
prominent position in the Jewish ministry in Podolia. Later, he was chairman in Poland of the
American Joint Distribution Committee for the Bialystok region. As a result of his personal experiences, he wrote
a book, A kapitl ukraine (A chapter [in the story of] Ukraine) (Vilna:
Farlag Shreberk, 1921), 168 pp. Under
his editorship, a pamphlet was published, entitled 15 yor kinder-heym in
novogrudek (Fifteen years of the children’s home in Novogrudok)
(Novogrudok, 1933), 50 pp. He was killed
in the town of Dvarets (Dvorets) during the war with Hitler’s multitudes. He was among the first to go to his grave.
